Human chorionic gonadotropin, a heterodimeric glycoprotein built from two non-covalently associated subunits: an alpha subunit of 92 residues, shared with the other glycoprotein hormones, and a beta subunit of 145 residues that is distinctive to this hormone. Both subunits are extensively glycosylated, and the carbohydrate accounts for a substantial share of the intact molecule.

Because the glycosylation pattern varies between preparations and carries much of the biological activity, this material is supplied and quantified in international units of activity rather than by mass. That is why the vial is labelled 10,000 IU and not in milligrams, and it is the reason no single molecular weight or empirical formula is stated below: for a glycoprotein those figures describe a particular preparation rather than the substance. The certificate of analysis for the lot governs.

Supplied as a lyophilized powder.

Lyophilized powder. The sealed vial is stable at room temperature during transit and can be held in a cool, dry, dark place for short periods. For anything beyond short-term holding, store it refrigerated at 36 to 46°F (2 to 8°C), or frozen at minus 4°F (minus 20°C) or below for long-term storage. Keep it away from light, moisture and heat. Lyophilized material is stable for the period stated on the certificate for the lot.

After reconstitution. Refrigerate at 36 to 46°F (2 to 8°C) and use within the window appropriate to the receiving laboratory's protocol. Do not leave reconstituted material at room temperature, and avoid repeated freeze and thaw cycles, which degrade peptide material. Handling and any further storage conditions are the responsibility of the receiving laboratory.
